Tale of 2 cities: Homicides drop in NYC, leap in Chicago

By M. Alex Johnson, NBC News

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, pictured at a flag-raising ceremony at the Chicago Police Academy in October, said this month that "we will not rest" until Chicago's growing homicide rate is reversed.

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg was crowing.

"The number of murders this year will be lower than any time in recorded city history," Bloomberg said Friday in a statement announcing that homicides in the city this year had fallen to 414 ? the fewest since it started keeping such statistics in 1963.

About the same time Friday, Chicago police were trying to get the message out that their city hadn't actually recorded its 500th homicide this year, as was being reported. A few hours later, they had to backtrack and acknowledge that, yes, in fact, "the city has seen its 500th homicide for 2012."

That's right: There were more homicides this year in Chicago than in New York, a city with three times the population. That means Chicagoans were proportionally 3.7 times more likely to be homicide victims than New Yorkers were in 2012:

Overall, crime is down in Chicago in just about every category ? except the most devastating one.

"We've obviously seen, as a city, our shootings and our homicides going in a different direction," Mayor Rahm Emanuel said this month at a graduation ceremony for police recruits, vowing, "We will not rest" until that trend is reversed.

Grim milestone: Chicago records 500th homicide of 2012

Meanwhile, in New York, "we're preventing crimes before someone is killed," Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said Friday.

New York didn't just reduce homicides ? it reduced them by 19.6 percent. And Chicago didn't just have more homicides ? it had 15.6 percent more.

Both figures are extraordinary. Last year, homicides fell by about 4 percent in New York, exactly in line with other U.S. cities with populations greater than 1 million, according to FBI figures. They fell in Chicago by just less than three-quarters of 1 percent.

While there's always the chance that the changes are just statistical flukes, two concrete factors appear to be at least partly responsible: money and priorities.

New York's police budget held steady in fiscal 2012, at about $4.6 billion.

Emanuel, facing a $300 million budget deficit, by contrast cut $67 million from the $1.3 billion police budget ? a 5 percent reduction that was down from his original proposal to cut police funding by 15 percent.

While Emanuel and Chicago Police Superintendent Garry?McCarthy said the cuts would help the police department become more efficient, Jens Ludwig, a criminal justice expert at the University of Chicago, said you'd have to be a fool "to think that you could have budget cuts like these and have no impact on crime and other aspects of public life."

Watch US News crime videos on NBCNews.com

"I have been really surprised at how little attention the local and state budget situation has received in discussions about the Chicago violence problem," Ludwig told NBC News on Friday.

The other factor is commitment, Ludwig said.?

"New York City seems to be exceptionally focused on getting illegal guns off the street," he said.

Ludwig drew an analogy to prosecution of drunken driving.

At one time, the official attitude was that "if the driver is lucky enough not to hurt anyone, it's no big deal," he said. "But (eventually) we started to realize drunk driving imposes probabilistic harm, and so we started to punish the risky behavior rather than focus on the luck of the draw about whether anyone happened to get hurt.

"New York City has taken that idea seriously for illegal gun carrying, recognizing that illegal guns on the street greatly increase the risk that an argument turns into a murder," he said.

Kelly, the New York police commissioner, stressed that point Friday, saying his officers had taken 8,000 weapons "out of the hands of people we stop, 800 of them illegal handguns."?

"We're preventing crimes before someone is killed and before someone else has to go to prison for murder or other serious crimes," he said.

New York City homicides, shootings at modern record lows

Bloomberg made a similar point, singling out what he called the city's renewed commitment to Operation Impact, a 2003 state initiative that pairs new police recruits with veteran officers in specific high-crime areas. The city's participation "reflects our commitment to doing everything possible to stop gun violence," he said.

Left unmentioned was the city's controversial stop-and-frisk policy, which allows officers to search someone as he or she exits a private building if they have a "reasonable suspicion" that the person is likely to commit a crime.

"I think there is some empirical basis to think that all those hundreds and thousands of stops and searches for illegal guns helps keep guns off the street and contributes to a lower homicide rate," Ludwig said.

But the policy is under legal challenge from civil liberties groups, which contend that police use it as a pretext to stop and search people without cause ? the great majority of them members of minority groups.

According to an analysis of raw arrest statistics by the nonprofit Center for Constitutional Rights, which opposes the policy, 84 percent of the 686,000 people stopped and searched in 2011 were African-American or Latino. Only 6 percent of the stops resulted in an arrest. And in only 2 percent of stops were illegal weapons or other contraband actually found.

Read the full report (.pdf)

Statistics like that make it worth asking "whether stop and frisk is worth the cost," Ludwig said. "All the stops come disproportionately to young, minority males."?

A trial date is set for March. In the meantime, Bloomberg said Friday, New York remains "the safest big city in America."

Britney Spears Fired From X Factor

So I guess I wasn’t the only one who was bored to tears watching Britney Spears awkwardly judge on the X Factor. I mean the girl barely seemed alive half the time. Never mind the fact that in the beginning of the season she looked like a complete hot mess – hair all over, make up all shoty. Uggh. It was not cute. It seems that Simon wasn’t impressed either so Britney made her $15 million and we can call it a day now.   Get the full break down at Pop On The Pop. Chimps in Uganda: Surprise Encounter

Fresh nests and fecal samples. We knew the chimpanzees had nested nearby. Not having seen any signs of their continued presence, however, we assumed they had already left their nests and traveled elsewhere to forage. While examining the nests, we were startled out of concentration by a chorus of pant hoots just nearby. We looked in the direction of the calls. A few chimpanzees were in a fig tree not far away, eyeing us calmly as they stuffed figs into their mouths. We watched them for a few minutes until they climbed down from the fig and traveled along the ground through a nearby bit of forest. After we were certain they were gone, we continued checking for samples, including looking around the fig they left behind.

A chimpanzee watches us from a nearby fig. Photo: Maureen McCarthy.

This is not the first time we?ve been surprised by the chimps. Sure, they can be boisterous and loud. There are times when they?re downright impossible to miss. On other occasions, however, they are so quiet that we can pass right by them and almost fail to notice them. I often wonder how many times we actually have failed to notice them.

So went December. It was a busy month that brought lots of data, including a few surprise encounters with the chimpanzees. Surprises, though inevitable, are not the norm for us. Our direct chimpanzee observations often involve getting reports from farmers who tell us that the chimpanzees are in a nearby tree or patch of forest. When we find chimpanzees, we make every possible attempt to give them their space. We keep a distance of over 50 meters and view them through binoculars. We do not enter an area of forest when we know that they are just inside within 50 meters.

Instead, we wait until we are reasonably certain that they have departed before entering to look for samples. This is very important since these chimpanzees are not habituated, meaning they are not accustomed to being followed by people for research or tourism purposes. (See another recent Scientific American blog post for additional discussion of habituation and its role in our understanding of chimpanzees.) Habituated chimpanzees can be followed at close range and are?hopefully?undisturbed by human presence. Habituation is necessary to undertake long-term research that provides meaningful insights into the behavior patterns of chimpanzees.

Studying unhabituated chimpanzees means that I can?t rely on close behavioral observations for data collection. The chimpanzees I study typically flee if people come near. This is why I focus on indirect evidence like fecal samples to provide critical data. Even with only some behavioral observations, however, the chimpanzees provide a wealth of information for study. Their nests provide insights into where they choose to sleep, their feeding remains show us what they?ve been eating, their knuckle prints tell us which direction they?ve traveled, and their dung provides?well, all sorts of interesting information.

Photo: Maureen McCarthy.

Photo: Maureen McCarthy.

Studying unhabituated chimpanzees also means that I must take care to avoid causing undue stress to my study subjects. Because these chimpanzees live in small forest patches, they have limited space to flee if we come too close for their comfort. It is for this reason that we keep our distance and enter onto their turf only after they?ve left it.

Given the importance of habituation for actually being able to watch the animals under study, one may wonder why I have chosen not to habituate these chimpanzees. There are several reasons. First, chimpanzee habituation is typically a long and arduous process. It can take one to two years or more, if feasible at all. As a lowly PhD student, I simply do not have the time or resources to undertake such a costly endeavor. More importantly, however, the risks of habituation for these chimpanzees may outweigh the benefits. Because they are often in conflict with the humans around them, being wary of people may actually work in their favor. The more comfortable they become with people, the more they may be at risk of aggressive encounters with their human neighbors.

My colleague Matt McLennan (as mentioned in previous posts) has cautioned against habituating chimpanzees in our study region for ecotourism, saying that ?habituation for tourism is inappropriate where apes and people live in very close proximity, for reasons that include increased likelihood of crop-raiding, risk of aggression toward local people and tourists by emboldened and/or stressed chimpanzees, and increased potential for disease transmission. Instead, habitat stabilization and enrichment must be the priority? (McLennan 2008, p. 52).

This study region is not unique in posing ethical concerns regarding the primates inhabiting it. Primatologists around the world must consider the ethical implications of various research methods, and design their studies accordingly. Just as lab scientists must consider potential risks to their study subjects in an effort to minimize harm, so must field scientists consider the potentially negative impacts of their research. Collecting data is only one aspect of the job. Personal, ethical, and emotional rewards and challenges are a part of everyday life. For me, this is what makes research an exciting, layered, and often imperfect experience.

Heavy Snow Blankets Southern Illinois

FIRST PERSON | WEST FRANKFORT, Ill. -- In a year of severe weather, including a drought that left the local area devastated, a winter storm has so far dumped six inches of snow with more still falling here in southern Illinois.

As of 8 a.m. local time, there was still a blizzard watch for the area until noon with snow in the forecast until at least 4 p.m. Authorities are advising everyone except for emergency workers to stay off of the roads until the storm passes.

The snow began falling locally a little after 10 p.m., though the winds, gusting up to 35mph, had begun in the early evening. The heaviest snow began to fall at 2 a.m. Visibility was so poor that venturing away from the house would leave you in a swirling haze of snow with winds inhibiting your ability to find your way back.

While visibility has improved considerably, the blowing snow alone makes for hazardous driving conditions. I live on a normally busy street and there are no signs anyone has attempted to venture out thus far.

There are currently no reports of power outages or downed limbs. The best course of action at this point is to stay inside and allow nature to take its course and then allow clean-up workers to do their jobs.

Local message boards have been speculating that the local area is in for a winter with far more snow than usual. The National Weather Service has projected that the winter will be colder than normal and that the area should be out of the drought before the farmers start spring planting. This doesn't bode well in an area that is 29 inches low on precipitation due to the drought but only averages eight inches of snow each winter!

(AP) ? Egypt's president says the disputed constitution just approved in a referendum establishes a new republic and calls on the opposition to join a dialogue to heal rifts and shift the focus to repairing the economy.

Mohammed Morsi said Wednesday he acknowledges the "respectable" proportion that voted against the constitution drafted by his Islamist allies, but offered no concrete gestures to an opposition that has so far rejected his dialogue and vowed to fight the charter. Critics say the charter restricts freedoms and enshrines Islamic rule.

Morsi said he moved swiftly to put the constitution to a referendum to end instability and open the road for development. The opposition had urged him to postpone the vote.

Wireless Network War Shifts to the Cloud in 2013

As employees begin to arrive back to work following the holidays, an increasing number of IT organizations are going to find out just how limited their wireless networks really are in the age of BYOD.

Most wireless networks were deployed as secondary networks that were intended to support a limited number of devices. Going into 2013, it?s becoming clear that not only will each user probably have multiple devices competing for bandwidth on these networks, but the wireless network will increasingly become the primary network for accessing corporate applications.

According to Xirrus CEO Shane Buckley, this fundamental shift in wireless network usage is not only going to require a major upgrade, it will shift the management of those networks into the cloud. Xirrus, an early pioneer of wireless networks that can be managed via the cloud, is gearing up for increased competition in this space from Cisco, which earlier this year agreed to acquire Meraki, a rival provider of a cloud-based wireless networking platform. According to Buckley, the core difference between Xirrus and Meraki is that Xirrus is designed to support enterprise networks at scale, while Meraki is a solution that?s more appropriate to small-to-medium businesses (SMBs).

Regardless of the approach, the one thing that Buckley says that most organizations are unprepared for is the amount of bandwidth that the latest generation of mobile computing devices can consume, especially Apple iPad devices. The end result is that as users roam across already fragile wireless networks, they wind up competing with each other for bandwidth that is already highly constrained.

Worse yet, most of those networks don?t make any differentiation between corporate applications and people trying to access video from, for example, ESPN.com. By moving the management of wireless networks into the cloud, IT organizations gain more flexibility because the control plane no longer needs to be tied to the controllers and access points on the wireless network, which in turn Buckley says makes it easier to dynamically allocate bandwidth where needed.

There?s clearly a war brewing for control over the next generation of wireless networks, many of which will become primary rather than secondary networks in the enterprise in 2013. How that will play out is anybody?s guess at this point. But, in 2013, end users are going to judge IT organizations by the quality of their wireless networking experience ? regardless of how fair or unfair that may be ? within the limitations of an existing wireless network that was never really designed to support increasing bandwidth demands.

Use These SEO Tips To Maximize Your Site Traffic | Internet ...

With everyone online rallying for attention to their site, maximizing your SEO potential is the only way to effectively get traffic to your web business. Search engines are tools that a large number of people use to find information on just about anything. Put these strategies to use, and your site?s traffic will explode.

Search Engines

TIP! Join the BBB or the nearby Chamber of Commerce to boost your SEO. These organizations link to their member businesses, so you can get more local visitors.

Use good, descriptive text for your site?s title tag so search engines can figure out the relevance of your site?s content, and display your site in lots of search results. Search engines usually will not show content past 60 characters. Words past the 60-character point also tend to matter less to search engines. It should go without saying that original content beats out copied content in the SEO wars. To bring users to your site, you need content that?s unique and interesting. Viewers will stay on your site and come back often if you are giving them content that gives good info. Put yourself in the search seat and ponder as to what keywords you would use to locate your website. Then ensure these keywords are prominent throughout your web pages. Add keywords to both your title tag and main content, but keep your keyword density to a sane level to avoid getting the dreaded ?keyword stuffer? label.

TIP! If you are looking to climb up the search engine ranks, then provide a plethora of content, going across many different topics, but still staying within the niche. For instance, if your blog is on soccer, you could write about the latest developments in the MLS, player trades or a recent game.

If your site covers a topic that is similar to online magazines, try to make contributions to those magazines with a backlink to your website. A lot of the time, ezines are indefinitely archived. This means that the links are still active, even after years have passed. People who find your articles will still be able to click on the links and you will still get the benefit of their visits. SEO, or search engine optimization, is essential for internet marketing. Putting the proper keywords throughout your content will give you a higher ranking on search engines, giving you more traffic. This helps your site get found by people. Search engines are a great way to get extra site visitors. Make your website easy for spiders to crawl, in order to maximize your site?s search engine ranking. Make sure you tag the images on your site, because spiders are only able to read text. You keywords should be included in your description.

TIP! Make sure to have proper analytics software before you start your SEO campaign. You need to purchase and install analytics software in order to monitor the performance of your SEO tactics.

If you are managing a business website, encourage the CEO or the owner of the business to become involved online. This is your voice of your company, and your readers want to hear that. When you blog through your own site, it increases your search engine visibility. Then, more visitors will visit your website. Informative sites generally rank higher then product-only sites. Informational content will improve the way that both search engines and site visitors perceive you.

TIP! Include your chosen key phrases in your page title and throughout your site. When people locate your page through a search engine, they will see this title, so make it relevant to your site.

Make all of your titles unique and interesting, even if the content is similar. Keep titles short and to the point for the most effect. The first few words of a title are always the most important. Put forth the image of an expert in your field. Utilize your expert qualifications for the purpose of creating a successful Internet marketing program. Post a website that focuses on a specific aspect of a certain market, then choose appropriate keywords, and use SEO to promote those keywords. Always pay attention to your customers needs, make it about them and not you. Educate yourself on the different aspects of SEO, but be careful in trying to do too much at once. It is impossible to become the best at every technique, so be sure to focus on one that will yield the best results for your business.

Quantcast Scores

You need to get more visitors to your website and keep them there to increase your page rank. There is increasing evidence that the amount of time a person spends on a site (according to metrics like Quantcast scores, etc. There is more and more evidence suggesting that how long a visitor stays on a site affects their PageRank, according to Quantcast scores. One useful way to keep visitors hanging around longer is to offer discussion groups and forums. Each search engine?s bots constantly look for newly updated content, so posting to yoru blog on a consistent basis gives the bots a reason to stop by. Not only that, if your articles are really good, other people will publish your links. After an article is shared, it starts to bring in higher levels of traffic.

TIP! There are many different strategies to optimize your site for search engines. By tailoring your website to include search-friendly terms and tags, you will be able to increase your search rankings.

Learn about exactly how much experience they have. In order to make a thoroughly researched and informed decision, you need to be aware of the potential risks involved in your choice.

Anchor Text

Make sure when writing internal links and backlinks for your website that you use good anchor text. You should describe what the page is about and give a good reason for your reader to click on your anchor text link. Ensure the right text is used as the keyword, so you receive a rise in ranking. Spiders focus on keywords, so if you pick out the most appropriate keywords for your content, they will count your anchor text towards your overall relevancy. Websites that effectively utilize search engine optimization almost never use image links. Image links do not link your content to the search engines effectively. When generating keywords and key phrases, it is important that you place yourself in the shoes of the customer. Always include the simplest terms a customer would use to find your site. Successfully optimizing your site for search engines may seem intimidating, but as this article has shown you, it doesn?t have to be difficult. Knowing the few basic principles that determine how the search engines work, can help you tweak your site to attract more visitors than ever. Before you know it, you?ll have a slew of new customers.

(AP) ? Engineer Dallas Goecker attends meetings, jokes with colleagues and roams the office building just like other employees at his company in Silicon Valley.

But Goecker isn't in California. He's more than 2,300 miles away, working at home in Seymour, Indiana.

It's all made possible by the Beam ? a mobile video-conferencing machine that he can drive around the Palo Alto offices and workshops of Suitable Technologies. The 5-foot-tall device, topped with a large video screen, gives him a physical presence that makes him and his colleagues feel like he's actually there.

"This gives you that casual interaction that you're used to at work," Goecker said, speaking on a Beam. "I'm sitting in my desk area with everybody else. I'm part of their conversations and their socializing."

Suitable Technologies, which makes the Beam, is now one of more than a dozen companies that sell so-called telepresence robots. These remote-controlled machines are equipped with video cameras, speakers, microphones and wheels that allow users to see, hear, talk and "walk" in faraway locations.

More and more employees are working remotely, thanks to computers, smartphones, email, instant messaging and video-conferencing. But those technologies are no substitute for actually being in the office, where casual face-to-face conversations allow for easy collaboration and camaraderie.

Telepresence-robot makers are trying to bridge that gap with wheeled machines ? controlled over wireless Internet connections ? that give remote workers a physical presence in the workplace.

These robotic stand-ins are still a long way from going mainstream, with only a small number of organizations starting to use them. The machines can be expensive, difficult to navigate or even get stuck if they venture into areas with poor Internet connectivity. Stairs can be lethal, and non-techies might find them too strange to use regularly.

"There are still a lot of questions, but I think the potential is really great," said Pamela Hinds, co-director of Stanford University's Center on Work, Technology, & Organization. "I don't think face-to-face is going away, but the question is, how much face-to-face can be replaced by this technology?"

Technology watchers say these machines ? sometimes called remote presence devices ? could be used for many purposes. They could let managers inspect overseas factories, salespeople greet store customers, family members check on elderly relatives or art lovers tour foreign museums.

Some physicians are already seeing patients in remote hospitals with the RP-VITA robot co-developed by Santa-Barbara, Calif.,-based InTouch Health and iRobot, the Bedford, Mass.,-based maker of the Roomba vacuum.

The global market for telepresence robots is projected to reach $13 billion by 2017, said Philip Solis, research director for emerging technologies at ABI Research.

The robots have attracted the attention of Russian venture capitalist Dimitry Grishin, who runs a $25 million fund that invests in early-stage robotics companies.

"It's difficult to predict how big it will be, but I definitely see a lot of opportunity," Grishin said. "Eventually it can be in each home and each office."

His Grishin Robotics fund recently invested $250,000 in a startup called Double Robotics. The Sunnyvale, Calif.,-company started selling a Segway-like device called the Double that holds an Apple iPad, which has a built-in video-conferencing system called FaceTime. The Double can be controlled remotely from an iPad or iPhone.

So far, Double Robotics has sold more than 800 units that cost $1,999 each, said co-founder Mark DeVidts.

The Beam got its start as a side project at Willow Garage, a robotics company in Menlo Park where Goecker worked as an engineer.

A few years ago, he moved back to his native Indiana to raise his family, but he found it difficult to collaborate with engineering colleagues using existing video-conferencing systems.

"I was struggling with really being part of the team," Goecker said. "They were doing all sorts of wonderful things with robotics. It was hard for me to participate."

So Goecker and his colleagues created their own telepresence robot. The result: the Beam and a new company to develop and market it.

At $16,000 each, the Beam isn't cheap. But Suitable Technologies says it was designed with features that make "pilots" and "locals" feel the remote worker is physically in the room: powerful speakers, highly sensitive microphones and robust wireless connectivity.

The company began shipping Beams last month, mostly to tech companies with widely dispersed engineering teams, officials said.

"Being there in person is really complicated ? commuting there, flying there, all the different ways people have to get there. Beam allows you to be there without all that hassle," said CEO Scott Hassan, beaming in from his office at Willow Garage in nearby Menlo Park.

Not surprisingly, Suitable Technologies has fully embraced the Beam as a workplace tool. On any given day, up to half of its 25 employees "beam" into work, with employees on Beams sitting next to their flesh-and-blood colleagues and even joining them for lunch in the cafeteria.

Software engineer Josh Faust beams in daily from Hawaii, where he moved to surf, and plans to spend the winter hitting the slopes in Lake Tahoe. He can't play pingpong or eat the free, catered lunches in Palo Alto, but he otherwise feels like he's part of the team.

"I'm trying to figure out where exactly I want to live. This allows me to do that without any of the instability of trying to find a different job," Faust said, speaking on a Beam from Kaanapali, Hawaii. "It's pretty amazing."

Best bets: 'Les Mis' dreams a Christmas dream

By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper, NBC News

Big movies will be wrapped up and delivered this Christmas. The long-awaited big-screen version of "Les Miserables" features such stars as Anne Hathaway, Russell Crowe, Hugh Jackman and Amanda Seyfried. Quentin Tarantino's "Django Unchained" tells the story of a slave (Jamie Foxx) who teams up with a white bounty hunter (Christoph Waltz) in a bloody attempt to find and free Django's wife. And if you prefer to sit at home and not fight the snow or cinema crowds, you can tune in to the new "United States of Bacon," celebrating the uber-trendy meat.

TUESDAY: 'Les Miserables'
Do you hear the people sing? Have you dreamed a dream in times gone by? Are you the master of the house, keeper of the zoo? Then line up now for "Les Miserables," the big-screen version of the hit Broadway musical. So much has already been heard about it -- Anne Hathaway, who's skinny on a regular day, lost even more weight to play the doomed Fantine. Russell Crowe, not exactly thought of as a stage singer (despite years in his own band) joins Hathaway, Hugh Jackman, Amanda Seyfried, Eddie Redmayne and others belting out the catchy tunes. Stealing the show, however, are Sacha Baron Cohen and Helena Bonham Carter as the thieving?Thenardier inkeepers. Even if a musical doesn't sound like your thing, "Les Mis" will haunt your thoughts for days after you see it. (Opens Dec. 25.)

TUESDAY: 'Django Unchained'
It's a Quentin Tarantino film, so you know what to expect from "Django Unchained." Witty dialogue. Big stars. And blood falling like rain. If in the wake of the Newtown shootings you don't have the taste for violence -- including brandings, heat torture and dozens of bloody shootings -- you'd do well to see something else. Jamie Foxx plays Django, a slave who teams up with a white bounty hunter (the amazing Christoph Waltz) in hopes of finding and freeing his wife (Kerry Washington) who's been sold away. Leonardo DiCaprio shines as a creepy plantation owner, and Samuel L. Jackson is equally disturbing as a house slave who's devoted to his master, with little regard for the other slaves. (Opens Dec. 25.)

SUNDAY: 'United States of Bacon'
How is Guy Fieri not involved in this? A new series called "United States of Bacon" will send chef Todd Fisher across the country in search of the best bacon-filled dishes. No, really. There's bacon-wrapped meatloaf, bacon on pizza, a triple-decker BLT and even a bacon happy hour. Twelve episodes are planned, because if there's one thing we won't run out of in this country, it's ingenious ways to use bad-for-you good-tasting food. E pluribus bacon! Gout study offers genetic insight into 'disease of kings'

Dec. 23, 2012 ? Scientists have shed light on why some people are more susceptible to gout than others. A study has identified 18 new genetic variations that increase levels of uric acid in the blood, which is the main cause of the disease. High levels of uric acid form small crystals in joints and tissues, causing pain and swelling -- the main symptoms of the condition once known as the 'disease of kings'.

Gout is the most common form of inflammatory arthritis, affecting up to two per cent of the world's population. Understanding how these common genetic variants increase uric acid levels in the blood may lead to improvements in the treatment and prevention of the disease. It could also help research into urate-lowering drugs.

The international team of researchers, including scientists from the University of Edinburgh and Queen Mary, University of London, say gout is becoming more common in the developed world.

They attribute its rise in part to increasing levels of obesity and an aging population.

This painful joint inflammation affects at least one in seventy adults in the UK with approximately 900,000 people suffering at least one attack of gout in their lifetime.

The work, published in Nature Genetics, was carried out by analysing the genetic data of more than 140,000 people, from more than 70 individual studies from Europe, the U.S., Japan and Australia and represents the largest study worldwide on this topic.

Dr Veronique Vitart, from the Medical Research Council Human Genetics Unit at the University of Edinburgh, and one of the lead authors of the study said: "Abnormal levels of uric acid have been associated with various common diseases and conditions, but causal relationships are not always clear. Gaining insight into the genetic components of uric acid levels offers a very useful tool to tackle these issues and to further our understanding of these conditions."

Professor Mark Caulfield, from the William Harvey Research Institute at Queen Mary, and a lead author said: "Existing therapies to avoid attacks of gout sometimes cause side effects. Our findings identify new potential mechanisms for gout and offer opportunities for new therapies which may improve prevention of this debilitating condition in the future.

(AP Photo/Ted S. Warren, Pool, File)

(AP) ? The most comprehensive study of potential World Trade Center-related cancers raises more questions than it answers and won't end a debate over whether the attacks were really a cause.

The study suggests possible links with prostate, thyroid and a type of blood cancer among rescue and recovery workers exposed to toxic debris from the terrorist attacks. But there were few total cancers and even the study leaders say the results "should be interpreted with caution."

The study involved nearly 56,000 people enrolled in a registry set up to monitor health effects from those exposed to the aftermath of the trade center attacks. Most participants volunteered for enrollment, which could skew the results if people who already had symptoms were more likely to enroll than healthier people.

Cancers diagnosed through 2008 were included in the study, but that's just seven years after the 2001 attacks, and cancer often takes longer to develop. People diagnosed with cancer before the attacks were excluded from the study.

Cancer rates were compared with those in the general New York state population. But the researchers had no data on whether people in the study had risk factors for getting cancer, including a strong family history, or if they had existing cancer that wasn't detected until after the disaster. Participants are being monitored for health issues and may have gotten more cancer screening than other people, which also could skew the results.

The increased risks were seen only in rescue and recovery workers, who likely had more direct, sustained contact with potential cancer-causing substances in the dust, smoke and debris from the attacks. But cancers weren't more common in workers who had the most exposure ? a finding that would seem to contradict the theory that contact was the cause.

The study comes just a few months after the federal government added dozens of types of cancer to a list of illnesses related to the trade center attacks that will be covered by a program to pay for health coverage.

The study results "won't settle the question because it's still too early," said Dr. Thomas Farley, New York City's health commissioner. "People are very, very interested in this topic and we thought it was important to get the data out that we have even though it is early."

Marijo Russell O'Grady, dean of students at Pace University's New York City campus, was at her office near the trade center during the attacks. She also lives nearby, and said she worries about how exposure to choking dust, ash and an "overwhelming burnt plastic smell" might affect her family, including her then 1 1/2 year-old son. They are all enrolled in the health registry.

Cancer is her greatest concern and it's "always present in the back of my mind," she said.

Researchers from the city's health department led the study, which was partly paid for by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. NIOSH spokesman Fred Blosser said the agency welcomes the results and that longer follow-up is needed to examine risks for cancers with that take a long time to develop.

The study appears in Wednesday's Journal of the American Medical Association.

Earlier research from the same registry linked the attacks with respiratory problems including asthma and symptoms of post-traumatic stress.

The new study involved a broader array of people, including firefighters and other emergency workers, along with residents and employees of workplaces near ground zero, Farley said.

In the new study, possible links were mainly seen with cancers diagnosed in 2007 and 2008 in rescue and recovery workers. These included 67 cases of prostate cancer, 13 thyroid cancer cases, and seven cases of multiple myeloma ? all at rates higher than in the New York state population.

Donald Berry, a biostatistics professor at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, said the study has too many limitations to draw any definitive conclusions.

"There's no evidence that 9/11 caused any of these cancers," Berry said.

He pointed out that no increased risks were found for lung cancer ? a cancer that might seem plausible after breathing lots of toxic dust and smoke.

Low Carb Dieting: Will it Get You Ripped or ... - ALLMAX Nutrition

Mark Anthony

A nutritional trend that has persisted for many years within health and strength circles, and has seen countless bodybuilders and fitness devotees lose valuable muscle tissue and become weaker in the gym ? all in an attempt to become leaner ? is low, or zero, carbohydrate consumption. Conventional wisdom posits that by lowering the carbohydrate content of our diets we are better able to properly modulate insulin to lower blood sugar levels and, by consequence, prevent body-fat storage. It has even been argued that by replacing carbohydrates with fats, and keeping protein consumption consistent (the so called ketogenic diet, during which the user is thought to become more efficient at mobilizing fats for energy while their insulin levels are down-regulated to further lessen fat storage), we can become leaner and more muscular.

Though the ?keto? diet may prove effective in the short term, sustaining this approach is likely not feasible over the long term.

While low carb eating plans may work for some people, a meal plan which emphasizes higher complex carbohydrates and proteins, and moderate fats, has been proven by many an athlete to be very effective, and most importantly, sustainable.

Low Carb & Bodybuilders

Ben Pakulski

From Arnold to Ronnie, to modern day giants such as Phil Heath and Ben Pakulski, the standard bodybuilding diet comprised of carbs, proteins and fats in a typical 45:35:20 ratio (though slight modifications can be made based on individual circumstances) has stood the test of time. The great six-time Olympia winner Dorian Yates noted in the extensive nutritional diaries he kept that:

The more he lowered his carbs, the weaker he became, the worse his recovery from exercise was, and the more muscle size he lost.

He reported to FLEX Magazine that upon trying the ketogenic diet his strength ?went to hell? and, consequently, he never again tried a low carb approach. Ever-the rationalist, Yates experimented with carb levels until he found the amount that worked best for him. His diet was big on this energy macronutrient. In describing his low carb experimentation, Yates stated, ?I felt like dog shit ? I couldn?t train hard, and I couldn?t get a pump.? Enough said.

Why Carbohydrate Reduction is Not the Best Option

Low strength levels among those utilizing low carb plans are a commonly reported problem ? this on its own should be enough to dissuade most athletes from following a low carb diet.

As the muscles? most readily useable and efficient fuel source, carbs, in complex form primarily, are of fundamental importance when training with full force. By filling our muscles with glycogen, converted from blood glucose ? itself converted from carbohydrates ? the ATP (Adenosine Tri Phosphate; as a transporter of chemical energy within cells for metabolic purposes it could be considered the fuel which powers muscular contraction) production process is pulled off without a hitch. As a consequence, strength levels increase and muscular endurance is optimal. Lifters who have replaced carbs with fats report differing results; for some, the process works to a certain point, while others begin to resemble the nutrient they have prioritized in their diet. Ask anyone who has restricted their carbs and you will hear of low training energy and a flat appearance. But low strength and a lack of muscular fullness is not the only potential problem facing those whose carbohydrate intake is minimal at best.

Recovery and LDH Response

One study (examining the effects of carbohydrate intake on muscle recuperation), in assessing two groups (one given maltodextrin, the other, water, and both assessed after nine days of high intensity training) found that the carbohydrate group experienced less DNA damage and fewer circulating leukocytes and monocytes (which indicate a lowered immune response), indicating a smaller stress response to the exercise.

Because carbs replenish muscle glycogen and muscle glycogen is vitally important for powering hard training sessions and facilitating optimal recovery following intensive workouts, many depend upon a sufficient carb intake for bodybuilding success.

Further findings demonstrated that a biochemical marker of muscle damage, LDH, was observed, in significant quantities, in the water group compared to the carb group. An increase in plasma DNA levels accompanied the elevated LDH, supporting the belief that carbohydrate intake protects against exercise-induced tissue damage.

The Benefits of Carbs

Ryan Watson

As a major component of a well-balanced nutrition plan, carbohydrates?

  • Provide energy to perform at optimal levels;
  • Provide fiber to cleanse the digestive system and remove waste;
  • Provide a variety of other important micronutrients to repair and rebuild weary muscles.

Protein sparing

Though the jury is still out on whether a high fat, low carb regime will enhance muscle size and strength for all who try it, carbohydrates have for many decades been known for their protein sparing effect. The more carbs we have on board, the less likely it is that protein will be converted into carbohydrates (gluconeogenesis) to fuel physical and mental processes.

Mental energy

Carbohydrates provide fuel for our brain; without enough carbs of the right kind (over-refined simple sugars can deplete energy), we feel groggy and tired. As bodybuilders, it is especially important that we consume sufficient carbs, not only to support our physical efforts in the gym but also to encourage the mental arousal which enables laser-like focus and intense concentration when hauling the iron.

Satiety

Complex carbohydrates such as brown rice, sweet potatoes, whole wheat bread and pasta keep us fuller, for longer. The lower calories in carbohydrates (four per gram) relative to fats (nine per gram) make them perfect when peaking to reveal one?s well-defined musculature.

Following a diet plan with roughly 45% carbs will enable us to maintain a low fat eating plan without binging on the wrong foods.

The problem with high fat diet plans is that the body is so conditioned to eating carbs for energy that it is extremely hard to eliminate them entirely; eating the high saturated fat and cholesterol laden foods included in ketogenic diets, without the carbs which so often accompany such foods, is not sustainable for many. Therefore, as someone looking to put on (and keep) lean muscle, it?s probably best to follow the time-tested 45:35:20 approach.

So Why the Bad Rap?

In short ? bro-science.

The popularity of low carb diets has soared in recent years, in fact, if you ask the average gym trainee for their advice on how best to drop stored body fat, they?re likely to tell you to cut the carbs. Actually, they?re partly correct, but let?s be more exact. You want to cut out the bad carbs, and consume the right carbs at the right time in the proper amounts.?Increase the wrong carbs, at the wrong time, in the wrong amounts, and it?s absolutely true, your body fat will increase.

Some Carbohydrate Consumption Tips

To benefit from carbohydrate consumption, here are some suggestions.

Avoid Bad Carbs

While strategically consuming simple carbs immediately post-workout may help to elevate performance and enhance muscle growth, there are those (cakes, cookies, sweets, donuts, etc.) which will confer little, if any, benefit. These, from a health standpoint, are nutritionally inert carbs and will only serve to strip valuable nutrients from your body as they migrate to your waistline.

Achieve a Good Mix

Monica WinnConsuming a good mix of complex and fibrous carbs is not only a more nutritionally beneficial practice, but will ensure greater metabolic efficiency. Fibrous carbs like broccoli and asparagus utilize?significant?energy to process, and there is a lower likelihood that they will be stored as fat. Too many simple sugars, for example honey, fruit and juice, will promote excessive insulin release, while the complex variety will be released slowly to sustain human activity while keeping blood sugar at lower levels.

More carb sources will also ensure greater variety to encourage adherence to your eating plan. If you don?t like what you?re eating, it?s hard to stick to a plan.

Eat Carbs Early & Directly Following Workouts

By eating most of your carbs over the first nine hours of the day, the physical activity that takes place around this time will ensure blood sugar modulation is optimal and fat storage is less likely. Avoid eating carb-rich foods in the evening.

By consuming simple sugar carbs (30 ? 40 g) directly after training, the muscles? greater receptivity to them will ensure they are stored in muscle tissue, not converted to fat (which may occur if taken at other times of the day). But beware, not all simple sugars are created equal! According to a study by Ivy:

Supplements composed of glucose or glucose polymers are the most effective for replenishment of muscle glycogen, whereas fructose is most beneficial for the replenishment of liver glycogen.

Check out KRUSH LOADED, a 5 carb blend post-workout beverage (with a 5 g dose of creatine), ideally paired with ISOFLEX to further increase protein synthesis.

Amount to Consume

The U.S. Department of Agriculture recommends that humans consume 45% ? 65% of their daily calories in the form of carbs (158 g ? 228 g per 1,400 daily calories consumed), a hard training bodybuilder will need more: 258 g ? 374 g per 2,300 daily calories (when aiming to pack on size in the off-season, 400+ per day may be needed). To ensure quality muscle gains are achieved, and fat accumulation is kept to a minimum, gauge your carb consumption (in line with the above recommendations) and if necessary reduce them by 30 g until the desired range is achieved.

Conclusion

If one wishes to trial a low carb/high fat diet, or practice carb restriction for a short period to reduce that last layer of body fat, then such methods are certainly worth investigating. However, given the findings and observations outlined above it might be wiser to adhere to a good balance of carbs, proteins and fats. Not only may your body function better, with improved physical performance, greater muscular fullness and more mental energy being the more obvious outcomes, but you will achieve a more sustainable, and nutritionally desirable ratio of macro and micronutrients, including fiber, enzymes and valuable vitamins and minerals to boost health and recovery.

Look for a New Job During the Holidays to Minimize the Competition

Look for a New Job During the Holidays to Minimize the Competition If you're looking for a new job to ring in the new year, the holidays may be the best time to start your search. Less competition from other job-hungry applicants combined with companies settling in on their new year budgets mean the odds of long-empty positions finally being filled is fairly high.

On Careers explains that the end of the year is a perfect time for job applicants to make a good final push to get into the jobs they've always wanted. For example, companies are finalizing their budgets for the next year, which means money for hiring may finally be available to managers desperate to hit new goals and milestones imposed by management?also fresh for the new year. Similarly, if a company or government agency has money left in their budget and they're headed towards the end of the year, they need to spend it or else they won't get it again next year?they'll be punished for thriftiness.

From the employee perspective, many people just stop looking as hard for work over the holidays, choosing instead to relax because of the holiday season. This means a motivated job hunter could swoop in and grab some great gigs they would normally have to fight others to get. Plus, many businesses are quieter over the holidays, giving prospective employees the opportunity to connect they wouldn't have otherwise. Use holiday parties and get-togethers as networking opportunities to get your feet in the door with people or companies you may not have a chance to meet with during the year. With luck, a new year could mean a new lease on life for your career.

Artist Spotlight: Francesco Cardone ? PLB Music

Francesco Cardone is a modern music composer from Bologna, Italy who has found his own stylistic code inside the interbreeding between the most characteristic aspects from contemporary symphonic music and the unmeasurable inspiration from oriental music.

Kernel Tuner for Android Review

Kernel Tuner is an awesome utility for those who are use Android-based HTC smartphones, especially with multi-core processors. The phone needs to be rooted though, and you need to have a custom ROM installed with a compatible kernel that allows you to underclock/overclock and undervolt/overvolt your CPU and GPU. Usually, the kernel of the stock Android OS of most smartphones is designed to operate at the set core speed, and not higher, to avoid instability issues and overheating. Another issue with stock kernels is that they are programmed to keep only one CPU core active while the other cores are used only when needed. Using the Kernel Tuner utility app, you can force all the cores to be active simultaneously to enhance the performance of your operating system. Kernel Tuner can also individually overclock or underclock each core along with overvolting and undervolting. You can additionally set the governors for each core so that the cores can operate individually and effectively. One can also overclock the GPU to enhance the graphical interface for a more fluid operation.?

?

One can create profiles according to his/her wish and make the processors operate with schedules. Other features included in the app are options to change the capacitive button?s backlights, fastcharge, Vsync for the display panel, colour depth tweaks, IO scheduler, notification LED timeout, Sweep2 Wake and enabling Swap. You can also tweak the cache size for the SD card. The app has a widget using which one can see the present state of the processor, battery and more information in real time. ?

Visible graphs are available in the app itself for CPU load and speeds of each core, battery life and battery temperature. A click on the ?Times in State? button will give you detailed information about the amount of time the processor has been spending in each of the frequencies available. This can help you tweak the processor efficiently so that you can set the core speeds according to the actual usage of your phone. This will not only keep your phone performing at par, but will also help save on battery life. Lastly, a system information is also available to get complete info about your phone?s hardware, the kernel and operating system. ?

The options menu of the utility app has settings for restoring the settings or changes you made on rebooting the device. This helps in case you goof-up the speeds or voltages and your phone freezes or becomes instable. You can also set the widget updating interval according to your preference to save on battery power. Options to show the processor speeds in the notification bar is also available, but it is recommended not to enable it as it can drain the battery power to an extent. Lastly, you can set the temperature units in Celsius or Fahrenheit. ?

Kernel Tuner presently as works on a few HTC models, but has also been known to work on other models. However, it should be used with caution if your phone is not compatible. Do note, this app needs a rooted phone and a compatible custom kernel installed. For GPU tweaking or overclocking, only Qualcomm Snapdragon S3 and S4 devices with appropriate kernel are supported. If this app does not work efficiently for your device, or if your phone behaves erratic after applying the tweaks, uninstall it after restoring all settings and changes. A complete Nandroid backup is recommended before you try out this app. For more information on this utility app, refer to the developers website.
