'Modern Family' Star Ariel Winter Buys a Home ... - AOL Real Estate

Ariel Winter home, Sherman Oaks

By Erika Riggs

At age 15, Ariel Winter already has two hit TV shows under her belt, previously starring in "ER" and currently playing Alex Dunphy on ABC's very successful sitcom "Modern Family."

Although Winter plays a role in a more traditional family on TV, the young actress currently lives with her older sister, Shanelle Workman, who is her legal guardian. Workman, along with husband David Barry Gray, just bought a new home in Sherman Oaks for $1.365 million, according to public records.

Winter's family situation was regularly covered in the press a few months back, as her guardianship was debated in court. Things appear to have quieted down, with Winter still settled in with her sister and brother-in-law. Workman and Gray are both working actors as well; Gray recently starred as Todd Palin in HBO's "Game Change," and Workman spent time on the soap operas "One Life to Live" and "The Bold and the Beautiful."

The new Winter-Workman-Gray home is an East Coast traditional style, set back from the street on a gated lot. Built in 1939, the listing claims that the 3,636-square-foot home might have once been the home of silver screen star Mae West.

With five bedrooms and 4.5 baths, the house has plenty of room for Gray and Workman's two children, as well as Winter. Living spaces are generously sized with high ceilings, crown molding and original hardwood floors. The kitchen includes a breakfast room and exit to private patio. Outside, the "entertainer's yard," includes a pool, barbecue area, grassy yard and full guest unit with kitchen and living room.

10 Favorite Retro Gaming Cheats | TechnoBuffalo

By Joey Davidson |

We here at TechnoBuffalo?s gaming department are nothing but a pack of filthy cheaters. Well, we were cheaters back when cheating was a cool trick to show off to your friends during awesome weekend sleepovers.

We fondly remember employing a lot of special tricks to advance and goof around in the games of yesterday, so we decided to list our favorites. Our 10 favorites, in fact.

Here are Ron and Joey?s 10 favorite cheats from way back when.

Attacking Your Own Guys to Level Up ? Final Fantasy Tactics

Final Fantasy Tactics rewards you for absolutely every successful action you take, giving points to advance your jobs skills. More often than not, that ability you really want is just out of reach, and there are just not enough enemies on the map to guarantee those final few points.

How do you make it so you won?t have to fight another battle?

Well, attack your friends of course. Indeed, you are rewarded for every completed action in Final Fantasy Tactics, and that includes attacking your allies. In fact, it?s often best to leave some weak little puke running around the stage while you and your best buddies hammer away at each other for a good 10-15 rounds.

You can have an army capable of bringing down every enemy in the game, and you won?t have even left the first battle if your cards are played right.

Fly the KOELSCH Buick Electra ? Star Wars: Rogue Squadron

I?m almost positive that I read about this code back in an old issue of Nintendo Power. I?m not 100% sure, but I think I was inspired to fly a Buick in one of the Nintendo 64?s best Star Wars games by one of my favorite old gaming rags.

At the code entry screen in Star Wars: Rogue Squadron, enter KOELSCH. Head back to your ship hanger and you?ll find a 1969 Buick Electra.

It flies, it fights and it?s awesome. This is probably one of my favorite cheats in any game since ever. It?s so goofy to see a car that Uncle Buck should have driven, though I believe his was a Mercury, flying in around planets in the Star Wars galaxy.

-Joey

Fresh Prince and DJ Jazzy Jeff ? NBA Jam TE

I grew up playing a lot, and I mean a lot, of both NBA Jam and NBA Jam TE when I was a kid. One of the best parts of both games was the ability to unlock special ballers from the name entry screen. My two favorites were Fresh Prince and DJ Jazzy Jeff.

The two characters are unlocked by typing in JAZ and WIL at the name entry screen in the game, the it requires gamers to hold a series of special buttons in order for it to work.

The result? The two-on-two action now involves two of the biggest TV and music celebrities from the early 90s. NBA Jam was an exceptional game. NBA Jam TE wasn?t nearly as strong as the first outing, but the presence of Fresh Prince and DJ Jazzy Jeff alone was enough to lift the sequel to new heights.

From downtown!

The Gold PP7 ? GoldenEye 007

GoldenEye is home to a slew of wonderful cheats. Invincibility, Paintball Mode, DK Mode, Dual Grenade Launchers. Unlocking cheats through speed runs was a genius idea, new at the time, which helped turn GoldenEye into one of the most replayable FPSs ever made.

I mean, why bother to unlock a cheat if you can?t use it permanently?

One of the best cheats is actually one of the easiest to unlock. The Gold PP7 is a special modified version of James Bond?s classic handgun, only this one will kill any enemy with a single bullet.

To get it, all you have to do is beat the final mission, Cradle, in under 2:15 on the easiest mode. Might seem like not that much time, but this was back when levels weren?t drawn out to a snails pace.

-Ron

The Hadouken ? Mega Man X

This cheat is just cool. During the Super Nintendo days, Capcom had two major hits on their hands, Street Fighter 2 and Mega Man X.

How about if you combine the two together? A little known fifth portal could also be uncovered after uncovering the rest of the game?s power-ups. A well placed jump just above the gate leading to Armored Armadillo and the subsequent climb reveal a the secret portal.

A bandana-toting Dr. Light then gives X the ability to use Ryu?s signature move, the Hadouken, using the exact same d-pad roll command used in the Street Fighter games.

The timing for using the weapon is a little tough, but it kills every enemy in the game with a single blast. Except for Sigma?he takes two.

-Ron

The Healing Massage ? Punch-Out!!

I still play Punch-Out!! for the NES on a semi-regular basis, so this little trick is something I actually use to this very day.

In between rounds, as fans of this classic game know, the trainer will give you some tips for the current bout. If you rapidly press select during this screen, the trainer will actually give Mac a shoulder rub that gives him some of his lost energy.

The problem? This only works once per game, so use it wisely.

-Joey

IDDQD? ?Degreelessness Mode? - DOOM

The idea of God Mode has been around for quite some time, and DOOM was one of the first to successfully implement it. What?s the point in beating a game when you have absolutely no possible way of losing?

Well, the point is to feel like a total murder factory, of course. IDDQD is an unforgettable code which lets indiscriminately plow through all those demon?s who gave you such a hard time if playing the game honestly.

Combined with the classic IDKFA code, all weapons and key cards, DOOM suddenly becomes a game about just straight-up massacre rather than one of exploration and uncovering secrets amongst the massacre.

-Ron

The Konami Code ? Gradius, Contra and Much More

The grandaddy of all cheat codes, if there?s one cheat that?s managed to infiltrate the world of pop culture at large, it?s this one. The Konami Code.

Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, B, A, Start. Sound familiar? If it doesn?t, don?t let the door hit ya on the way out.

While it was originally used in Gradius, the Konami Code was made popular in Contra, one of the hardest games ever released for the NES. Inputting it gave the players 30 lives, and they?d need all 30 to beat the game. Since then, it?s been used in games and even on websites. Don?t bother trying it here, my suggestion for it hasn?t been implemented yet.

-Joey

Stealth Suit ? Metal Gear Solid

Quick, what is the one piece of equipment that can make a stealth game so much easier? Well, a stealth suit, obviously.

Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima was smart enough to realize that what gamers really want to do in the ultimate stealth playground is torment the poor souls you are supposed to be killing. A simple bullet is not enough.

Traps, decoys, the random taps on a shoulder. It all becomes so much easier once Snake dawns this marvelous piece of equipment. The enemy won?t even know what hit them.

The only downside to the stealth suit is that you?ll have to go for the non-canonical ending and ride off into the sunset with your new best buddy, Otacon, instead of the cute red-head. Oh well?New Game +!

-Ron

The Super Jump ? Mega Man 3

Here?s an interesting little self-discovered secret my cousins and I uncovered back in the day. Hold down the RIGHT directional button on the second player controller while playing Mega Man 3, and the Blue Bomber suddenly gains the ability to jump three times as high as he normally would, as if normal air were water.

Not only can he jump higher, but he is also invulnerable to damage after falling into a pit. The classic death sound effect plays, but Mega Man can humorously launch himself from the pit anyway and proceed throughout the level invulnerable to his enemies.

In fact, the only thing which can kill you while in this Super Jump God Mode form is spikes, so be absolutely careful not to jump too high. Shadow Man?s stage stands out in my memory.

How a Top Training Facility Turns Rescued Dogs into Rescue Dogs

Search and Rescue (SAR) dogs have a very important job. Natural disaster? Fertilizer plant explosion? They're on the case. Before they became the canine equivalent of Navy SEALs, many of them were unwanted and unloved. Until they went through training at the National Disaster Search Dog Foundation (SDF), one of the most elite programs in the country. More »

Marathon bombing prompts backpack bans

Left unattended, no accessory looks as menacing these days as a backpack.

At the airport. On the subway. At a sports event.

And, as a result of the two backpack-encased bombs that exploded near the finish line at the Boston Marathon, sports teams and leagues around the world are rethinking what kind of bags, satchels, purses and, yes, black nylon backpacks should be allowed inside stadiums and arenas.

The packs will even be the focal point of a conference this summer of stadium-security personnel in Orlando .

"After what happened ... I wouldn't be surprised if the number of people eliminating backpacks would increase," said Lou Marciani, director of the National Center for Spectator Sports Safety and Security, founded in 2006 and based at the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg.

Next Saturday, more than 165,000 people are expected at Churchill Downs for the Kentucky Derby. Backpacks, duffel bags and large purses have been banned from the track since 2002 ? part of the clamp-down that followed the Sept. 11 attacks. Still, Derby officials have told fans their bags will undergo increased security checks for this year's race.

No matter where the world ends up on the bag-check spectrum, some fans may never again regard the pack slung across their body quite the same way.

"I never really thought about backpacks until last week, and now you notice backpacks all over the place," said Ryan Hershberger of Hartwell, Ga., as he headed into a Colorado Rockies game carrying a black backpack. "It makes you think."

Down the street, at the Denver Nuggets game, a handful of fans shared the same sentiment.

"I've been thinking about it all day," Joel Cross said on the concourse at the Pepsi Center in Denver. He and his wife traveled from Harrisburg, Neb., to attend Tuesday night's Nuggets playoff game. "We're from a community where our whole county only has 600 people in it. Nobody is going to bomb us because there's no one there. But we're coming to a populated area."

The NFL beefed up security for thousands of fans attending its annual draft, which runs through Saturday, with metal detectors, pat-downs and about 20 percent more personnel in place than previous years. Backpacks are banned. The league said it would consider what, if any, changes might be made for the 2013 season, which ends with the Super Bowl in New York next February.

Major League Baseball's security officials met Thursday but Commissioner Bud Selig said no changes are expected in the rules on bags fans can bring to ballparks, generally limited to 16x16x8 inches. The meeting was scheduled before the Boston explosions that killed three and injured more than 260/

"I wouldn't say that Boston has changed anything," Selig said. "Each club makes its own decision."

At Yankee Stadium, for example, briefcases, coolers and other hard-sided bags or containers are not permitted. At Kansas City's Kauffman Stadium, wrapped presents are banned along with cameras with lenses of 12 or more inches. The Baltimore Orioles ban bags with wheels at Camden Yards.

Boston and San Francisco were among the teams opting to use metal-detecting wands on fans and their possessions this week.

"We've added people, and people are getting in faster now, so we're going to stick with the plan," Giants president and CEO Larry Baer said.

Though the marathon bombings caught the attention of the world, not every event or championship, especially overseas, is beefing up or changing security measures.

For instance, officials at Manchester United, the FA Cup final and the European Champions League say their policies, which either ban large bags or strongly discourage them, are under constant review but not set to change.

"We did, of course, contact the police in the aftermath of the Boston bombings, as part of our commitment to the security of fans and visitors to the stadium," Manchester United said in a statement.

At Wimbledon, where tennis action starts in June, no changes are planned.

"It was a terrible event, but we have no reason to believe it's something that has a direct impact on Wimbledon," All-England Club chief executive Richard Lewis said, referring to the Boston explosions.

At the Summer Olympics in London, soft-sided bags were required to fit under seats and couldn't hold more than 25 liters (6 gallons).

Sebastian Coe, who led London's organizing committee, says a ban on backpacks at sports events would not be justified.

"We have to make some pretty tough decisions in the way we want to live our lives," he said. "It's very easy to draw all sorts of conclusions (from the Boston bombings). Do we want to live in a world where people can't wear backpacks to sporting events? I'm not sure we do."

Organizers in Brazil aren't making any radical changes to their backpack policy for the upcoming Confederations Cup or next year's World Cup. So far, the extensive list of prohibited items includes "unwieldy" bags ? no more than 10x10x10 inches and too big to fit under a seat.

Officials in Russia, which hosts the 2018 World Cup, said that whenever a sports-related tragedy occurs, they review what happened "to ensure that our own regulations and procedures are sufficiently covering such potential tragedies or risks."

In Sochi, Russia, site of February's Winter Olympics, security for test events was so stringent that the president of the international skiing federation, Gian Franco Kasper, cracked, "The only moment they didn't inspect our athletes was during the race."

International Olympic Committee member Dick Pound of Canada said one strategy might be to push back security boundaries.

"I remember in Vancouver and other places, the tension between the organizers and the events and the security folks was over the size of the perimeter," Pound said. "If you can move the perimeter back 50 or 100 meters, a backpack bomb is going to have less lethal effect."

In the U.S., NBA spokesman Tim Frank wouldn't comment on specific security practices, beyond saying: "We regularly practice a wide range of state of the art security measures in all of our arenas." The Nuggets have long used wands and searched bags. But Cross' wife, Shelly, said she noticed a more extensive security presence at Tuesday's game than the last time they made the trip to Denver.

"We were here not too long ago and we don't remember this," she said.

At least one backpack developer said she was unaware of any pending changes to basic designs. She also thought the bombings were unlikely to create a need for see-thru or clear backpacks.

"I don't think people want to share their belongings with everyone. Everyone wants their privacy," said Annelies Mertens, a member of the Samsonite development team in Belgium. "I don't think this will have an influence on the way backpacks are made. I don't see that happening."

While the Boston Marathon presented its own set of difficult challenges ? securing a 26-mile course dotted with trash cans and spectators on almost every block ? one expert says there's no such thing as perfect security guidelines, regardless of venue.

"A no-backpack policy is fine if it applies to everyone," said Derek Catsam, an associate professor at University of Texas of the Permian Basin in Odessa who has studied the safety issue in stadiums. "But then you start making exceptions for people with kids, and for the elderly and for women with purses and people in expensive seats. Where does it end? You can have a policy or not have a policy. But once you start selectively enforcing it, that's going to be problematic."

After the bombings, the NHL's Boston Bruins added metal-detecting wands to their security regimen and checked cars parking in a garage underneath the arena. Security measures vary by arena in the NHL. The New York Islanders, for example, don't allow backpacks; the Detroit Red Wings ban oversized bags and search all bags that are allowed in.

Catsam said security can always be ratcheted up, but then comes the issue of how much convenience people are willing to give up for the sake of safety.

"They could start saying you can bring whatever kind of backpack you want but you have to go through an X-ray system like you do at the airport," he said. "It would take forever and we'd adjust, but I'm not sure what we'll discover or if we'll be making anything really safer."

Marciani, on the other hand, envisions a day when backpacks are as obsolete at a stadium as the bulky transistor radios that fans once brought along so they could listen to play-by-play as they watched the game.

"I think it's just one less aggravation we'd have to put up with," he said. "I'd just say, 'Why backpacks at a stadium?' I don't think we need them."

We Love Drake Speaking the Truth About Chris Brown

Drake isn't interested in making nice with Chris Brown. The Canadian rapper, 26, has been Brown's rival for Rihanna's affections over the years, and had a nasty altercation with him in a bar last year. But unlike most of the music industry, Drake doesn't care about staying on Brown's good side. In a Friday night interview with East Village Radio's Elliott Wilson, Drake aired his feelings about the so-called feud.

Paris Jackson hopes for normal childhood

By Randee Dawn, TODAY contributor

Being 15 years old isn't easy for anyone, but being the daughter of the late Michael Jackson makes adolescence even tougher. But so far, Paris Jackson seems to be managing those difficult years admirably, and in a recent interview with Britain's Daily Mail, she opened up about her famous father and her plans for the future.

"We all loved him to death," she said in the interview. "He had that good energy where you just didn't want to leave."

She also respected Jackson's decision to cover the faces of his children when they went out in public, even if it seemed strange at the time: "He didn't want anyone to see what we looked like," said Paris. "That way we could have what he didn't, which was a normal childhood."

She said her father taught her how to dance -- and to moonwalk.?

Not that it's entirely easy to be Michael Jackson's daughter, though. Paris admitted in the interview, "I'm on a tight leash, and I feel if that leash was loosened a little bit I would definitely have a chance at a normal childhood."

At the moment she's got no real plans to expand the spotlight that will likely always be on her in some fashion. While she says she'd like to be an actress "throughout high school," she hopes to walk a different path later on.

"I want to go to medical school and be a doctor specializing in heart surgery," she said. "I want to help people."

She also hopes to bring her father's famed Neverland Ranch back to its former glory: "I think it should be restored to how it used to be so that the children who couldn't have a childhood could have fun there."

(AP) ? After Earthquakes forward Alan Gordon directed a slur at Will Johnson, the Timbers midfielder responded with the game-winning goal.

Johnson's goal on a free kick in the 78th minute gave Portland a 1-0 win on Sunday night. It was the Timbers' second straight victory, moving the team to 2-1-3 under new coach Caleb Porter.

Gordon was ejected in the second half after receiving a pair of yellow cards involving fouls on other players. But minutes earlier, he was seen on the television broadcast using a slur toward Johnson.

After the match, Gordon released a statement through the team.

"I would like to sincerely apologize to everyone who watched tonight's match on NBC Sports Network. The language I used came during a heated moment and does not reflect my feelings toward the gay and lesbian community. I made a mistake and I accept full responsibility for my actions," the statement read.

Johnson was diplomatic.

"I think it's probably better that I don't comment on that," he said. "It's a very sensitive matter. I'd prefer the league go through with their protocol."

It's standard procedure for Major League Soccer to review the video of matches that involve a red card.

Gordon was escorted from the locker room after the game by team personnel and did not speak with reporters after match.

The loss dropped the Earthquakes to 2-3-2.

Forward Steven Lenhart was back in San Jose's starting lineup after returning from a partially torn meniscus last weekend as a reserve. The striker missed San Jose's first five matches after offseason surgery. That meant the Earthquakes' so-called Bash Brothers ? Lenhart and Gordon ? were both starting for the first time this season.

But Gordon was sent off in the 68th minute after getting a second yellow card, for elbowing Timbers defender Mikael Silvestre in the face, causing a bloody lip. Gordon was also received a yellow in the 41st minute for a foul on Diego Chara.

Video replay appeared to show that Gordon directed a slur at Johnson a few minutes before his ejection. Such a comment would bring an automatic three-match suspension by MLS.

Some 10 minutes later, Johnson hit a free kick from just outside the penalty arc that sailed over the wall and past goalkeeper Jon Busch.

"It doesn't work every time," Johnson said. "But when it does, it's nice."

Earlier in the day, Porter had texted Johnson asking, "Why don't you hit a free kick tonight?" The coach was floored when it happened.

"Everybody's going to talk about the free kick," Johnson said. "But it's really about the team."

The teams played to a scoreless draw in the first half. Portland missed an opportunity when Ryan Johnson's header was snagged in midair by Busch in the 43rd minute.

The Timbers dominated possession (62.6 percent) in the first half, but matched San Jose with just four shots. It was a physical match, as evidenced by the yellow cards. Four minutes after Chara was fouled by Gordon, Chara got a yellow card for a foul on Rafael Baca.

Following the game, Yallop questioned why officials waited to make the call to eject Gordon until after the video scoreboard had shown a replay, firing up the crowd at Jeld-Wen.

"You should let the officials call the game," he said, adding that he had not seen the replay.

Portland was without midfielder Diego Valeri, who was elbowed in the face last weekend against the Dynamo and only participated in light workouts this week because of the league's concussion protocol. The Timbers also lost defender David Horst to a fractured right tibia during the Houston game. He is out six months.

The Timbers also announced shortly before the game that defender Andrew Jean-Baptiste would not start because of a right adductor strain. Futty Danso started in his place.

Portland is 2-0-4 against the Earthquakes. Sunday's game was the first of a home-and-home with San Jose, and the two teams meet again next Sunday at Buck Shaw Stadium.

Marco Rubio: Immigration Reform Compromise Isn't 'Amnesty,' Will Be More Onerous Than Current Law

WASHINGTON -- Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) suggested Sunday that the bipartisan immigration reform currently being negotiated by eight senators would not constitute "amnesty" because the path to legal status it proposes would be more onerous than the standards under current law.

"They don't qualify for any federal benefits -- no food stamps, no welfare, no Obamacare," Rubio said during an appearance on "Fox News Sunday." "They will have to stay in that status until at least 10 years elapses ... and then all they get is a chance to apply for a green card." Anyone applying to stay in the country under the proposal would also have to pay an upfront fine.

Advocates of immigration reform emphasize that the existing system is filled with unreasonable barriers to entering the country legally, and impractical terms for bringing undocumented workers into society. One of the top goals for reformers is to make it easier for people already living in the United States without required documentation to become citizens. Some critics of the bipartisan negotiations currently underway in the Senate have noted that creating an official, long-term second-class status for the undocumented may create more problems than it solves.

Rubio rejected that idea on Sunday, defending the notion that obtaining a green card through a process created by reform should be more difficult than obtaining one through existing channels. Under current law, Rubio said, undocumented workers in the U.S. have to leave the country and wait 10 years before they can obtain a green card. Rubio also used the term "illegal aliens" to describe undocumented workers.

"What we have today is de facto amnesty ... people who are hiring illegal aliens and paying them less than American workers," Rubio said.

"If somehow being in the country illegally is cheaper, easier and quicker than the right way, I wouldn't support that," Rubio said. "It will be cheaper, faster and easier for people to go back home and wait 10 years than [go through] this process. That's why it's not amnesty."

Rubio reiterated that argument on ABC's "This Week."

"The alternative we've created is going to be longer, more expensive and more difficult to navigate," Rubio said.

Kobe Bryant Torn Achilles Probable With MRI Scheduled To Confirm: Lakers (VIDEO)

The Los Angeles Lakers remained in control of their playoff fate but at a cost that may make any postseason trip much shorter than they would like.

Kobe Bryant went down with a leg injury late in the Lakers' 118-116 win over the Golden State Warriors on Friday night and the team believes that he has suffered a torn Achilles tendon.

Los Angeles Lakers

Lakers PR team saying Kobe Bryant suffered a probable torn Achilles in tonight?s game. He?ll have a MRI tomorrow to confirm.

Los Angeles Lakers

Kobe said he knew the Achilles was done when he limped back on the court to shoot the free throws. He made both.

Convinced that he had indeed suffered a torn Achilles, an emotional Bryant addressed the media after the game.

MORE FROM THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

LOS ANGELES ? Kobe Bryant scored 34 points while playing much of the second half in obvious pain from his injured left leg, and the Los Angeles Lakers rallied in the final minutes without him to stay in the playoff picture with a 118-116 victory over the Golden State Warriors on Friday night.

Stephen Curry scored 47 points in a dynamic performance for the Warriors, but Los Angeles played just enough late defense to hang on for a crucial win.

Bryant stayed in the game until 3:06 remained despite obvious mobility limitations and two lengthy breaks to walk off an injury from early in the second half.

The Lakers said he probably had a torn Achilles' tendon and would have an MRI exam Saturday.

Los Angeles (43-37) stayed one game ahead of Utah (42-38) for the eighth playoff spot in the Western Conference with two games to go. The Jazz hold the tiebreaker.

Palestinian president accepts PM Fayyad's resignation

RAMALLAH, West Bank (Reuters) - Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas accepted the resignation of Prime Minister Salam Fayyad on Saturday, the official Palestinian news agency said.

Fayyad had offered his resignation in a letter to Abbas following weeks of sparring over Fayyad's handling of the government and an economic crisis afflicting the Israeli-occupied West Bank.

"The president told Dr. Salam Fayyad he accepted his resignation, and asked him to conduct the work of the government until a new government is formed," official news agency WAFA said.

Western diplomats had expressed dismay at the latest turmoil within the Palestinian Authority at a time when the United States is making a concerted effort to revive defunct Middle East peace negotiations and boost the local economy.

During a visit to the region last month, U.S. President Barack Obama praised Fayyad as a partner in peace, and Secretary of State John Kerry held private talks with the beleaguered prime minister this week, in a clear sign of support.

Fayyad, a former World Bank official, is widely credited with helping create the institutions needed if the Palestinians are to gain independence from Israeli occupation.

Widely admired abroad, including in Israel, Fayyad, however, failed to build a strong political base within the Palestinian territories, which left him vulnerable to attacks from Abbas's own Fatah party and the Islamist group Hamas, which governs in Gaza.

Homeless collect change ? for girl with cancer

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - For some homeless men in Kansas City, their spare change went to help a 4-year-old girl with cancer.

The parents of Payton Adams, 4, have struggled with the medical payments to treat her cancer, a story that the homeless men at City Union Mission heard about thanks to the evening manager at the shelter, Johnny Evans, who doubles as a security officer at Payton?s preschool.

The men were able to collect three water jugs full of spare change and donated the third jar to Payton and his parents Friday night.

?It takes a lot, she has to eat a certain way, medical bills, transportation to the emergency room, and it?s amazing how these guys who have very little, how the pennies add up,? Payton?s mom, LeiLani Adams said. ?Sometimes we come out of here with $500. Whatever they have, it has really been a blessing.?

The other two jugs full of change were delivered to the family in the last two years.

?Payton?s parents write a thank you note back to the men and tell us how much was in the bottle,? Evans said. ?For these men who are often separated or estranged from their families or have no family at all, it brings joy to their hearts to play a part in bringing joy to the life of this little girl.?

Black women may gain more weight with contraceptives

By Genevra Pittman

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Black women were the most likely to gain weight while using a long-acting form of contraception, such as a hormone implant or intrauterine device (IUD), in a small new study.

Researchers found that during a year of using progestin-based long-term contraceptives, black women put on an average of four to six pounds, compared to a trend of slight weight loss or smaller weight gain for white and other women.

But Dr. Jeffrey Peipert, who worked on the study, cautioned against blaming the implants, injections and IUDs for the extra weight gain among certain women.

"Anecdotally, many doctors have had patients coming in and saying, ?I'm gaining weight and I think it's my contraceptive method and I want to stop using it,'" said Peipert, from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis.

"People don't realize that the norm, while it may not be good, (is to) gain weight over time, and it may or may not be your method."

The findings are based on 427 women who were part of a larger study in which participants were provided with one of four types of contraception at no cost: a copper IUD or an implant, injection or IUD that delivers the hormone progestin over time.

How much weight women gained - or lost - varied greatly among those using each method, the researchers found. But on average, study participants put on more pounds while using the hormone implants or injections than a hormone-free copper IUD.

However, differences in age and race seemed to drive those variations, the team writes in the journal Contraception. They found that regardless of the contraceptive method used, black women tended to put on more weight than others.

Peipert said that could be due to differences in diet or exercise - not necessarily in how women respond to progestin-based contraceptives.

"There are many other factors that are involved in weight maintenance, weight gain or loss other than contraception. And these other factors probably are more important than the contraceptive method," he said.

Some researchers have believed progestin may slow down metabolism or encourage women to eat more, according to Peipert. But the new findings don't support a strong effect of the hormone.

"As a result of pregnancy, women tend to gain a lot more weight than they do from a contraceptive method," he said.

"My take-home message is, don't blame the contraceptive method."

Moving cells with light holds medical promise

Apr. 8, 2013 ? Scientists at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis have shown they can coax cells to move toward a beam of light. The feat is a first step toward manipulating cells to control insulin secretion or heart rate using light.

Their research is published April 8 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences Online Early Edition.

"We have succeeded in using light as a kind of on-off switch to control cells' behavior," says principal investigator N. Gautam, PhD, a professor of anesthesiology. "Much of the way cells behave is due to their ability to sense signals in the environment. In these experiments, what the cells sense is the presence of light."

The new research focuses on immune cells. By adding a light-sensitive protein to the cells, the scientists could direct cells to move simply by shining a laser in the direction they wanted a cell to travel.

"We were interested in the idea that you could activate receptors on a single area of a cell's exterior," says Gautam. "It's what happens naturally when an immune cell senses something amiss in its environment and then migrates toward that potential trouble, perhaps a bacterial infection or inflammation."

The researchers used genetic engineering techniques to introduce a light-sensing protein, called an opsin, into immune cells. Humans and other animals make opsins in the eye, and when activated by light, they allow cells in the eye to translate light signals into vision.

Gautam and the study's first author, Ajith Karunarathne, PhD, postdoctoral research associate in anesthesiology, introduced several different opsins into immune cells. After demonstrating that those cells had an affinity for light, the researchers performed the same experiment with nerve cells, with equal success. The idea is to "trick" the cells into thinking that the opsin is a normal receptor protein.

The light-sensing opsin they snuck into immune cells and nerve cells belongs to a family of receptors that recently has been in the spotlight. These are G protein-coupled receptors whose importance was recognized in the awarding of the 2012 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. The same receptors play a key role in vision, smell, behavior and mood, regulation of the immune system, heart rate and the spread of some tumors.

In another recent study, also in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences Online Early Edition, Gautam's team made nerve cells grow branches, called neurites, when the cells were exposed to light. Currently, the laboratory is working with cardiac cells to test whether light signals can speed up or slow down the rate at which heart cells pulse.

"Eventually, we would like to introduce multiple light-sensing proteins into these cells," says Karunarathne. "The idea would be to use two different wavelengths of light. That way, when you shine one light for example, it could signal the first light-sensing protein to make the heart beat faster. Then a different wavelength of light could be used to slow down the heart rate."

In future studies, the researchers plan to use the same kind of strategy to learn whether light can influence insulin secretion and the regeneration of nerve cells. They also are using the approach to study signaling circuitry in cells to find out how networks of molecular pathways control cell behavior.

"This strategy can be valuable," Gautam says. "We can control migration of cells, which is important not only to the immune system but also during embryonic development to ensure that cells that make the heart, liver and other organs go to the right place. It's also key in cancer metastasis, when a tumor releases cells that migrate to other parts of the body. We are excited by the many possibilities."

Funding for this research comes from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). NIH grant numbers are GM069027 and GM080558.

Hackers target Israeli government websites

JERUSALEM -- A weekend cyberattack campaign targeting Israeli government websites failed to cause serious disruption, officials said Sunday. The attacks followed warnings in the name of the hacking group Anonymous that it was launching a massive attack.

Yitzhak Ben Yisrael, of the government's National Cyber Bureau, said hackers had mostly failed to shut down key sites.

"So far it is as was expected, there is hardly any real damage," Ben Yisrael said. "Anonymous doesn't have the skills to damage the country's vital infrastructure. And if that was its intention, then it wouldn't have announced the attack ahead of time. It wants to create noise in the media about issues that are close to its heart," he said.

Posters using the name of the hacking group Anonymous had warned they would launch a massive attack on Israeli sites in a strike they called (hash)OpIsrael starting April 7.

Israel's Bureau of Statistics was down on Sunday morning but it was unclear if it was hacked. Media said the sites of the Defense and Education Ministry as well as banks had come under attack the night before but they were mostly repelled.

Israeli sites reported brief cyberattacks on the stock market website and the Finance Ministry website Saturday night. But the two institutions denied the reports.

Israeli media said small businesses had been targeted, and some websites' homepages were replaced by anti-Israel slogans. In retaliation, Israeli activists hacked sites of radical Islamist groups and splashed them with pro-Israel messages, media said.

Shlomi Dolev, an expert on network security and cryptography at Ben Gurion University, said attacks of this kind will likely become more common. "It is a good test for our defense systems and we will know better how to deal with more serious threats in the future," he said.

Dolev said Anonymous had declared on its forums that the main assault would be in the evening. Hackers have had little success in their attempts to take over and change Israeli sites so far and are planning "denial of service" attacks where sites are overwhelmed and communications are hindered.

He said Israel is well prepared to deal with the attacks. "This is a real battle. It is good training for our experts," he said.

Hackers have tried before to topple Israeli sites.

In January last year, a hacker network that claimed to be based in Saudi Arabia paralyzed the websites of Israel's stock exchange and national airline and claimed to have published details of thousands of Israeli credit cards.

A concerted effort to cripple Israeli websites during November fighting in Gaza failed to cause serious disruption. Israel said at the time that protesters barraged Israel with more than 60 million hacking attempts.

An official of the militant Hamas movement that rules the Gaza Strip praised the current attack. "God bless the minds and the efforts of the soldiers of the electronic battle," Ihab Al- Ghussian, Gaza's chief government spokesman, wrote on his official Facebook page.

Afghanistan Attacks Leave 6 Americans, Afghan Doctor Dead

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan -- Militants killed six Americans, including a young female diplomat, and an Afghan doctor Saturday in a pair of attacks in Afghanistan on Saturday. It was the deadliest day for the United States in the war in eight months.

The violence ? hours after the U.S. military's top officer arrived for consultations with Afghan and U.S.-led coalition officials ? illustrates the instability plaguing the nation as foreign forces work to pull nearly all their combat troops out of the country by the end of 2014.

The attacks came just days after insurgents stormed a courthouse, killing more than 46 people in one of the deadliest attacks of the war, now in its 12th year.

The three U.S. service members, two U.S. civilians and the doctor were killed when the group was struck by an explosion while traveling to donate books to students in a school in the south, officials and the State Department said.

In a statement, Secretary of State John Kerry said the Americans included a department of defense civilian and the foreign service officer.

"She tragically gave her young life working to give young Afghans the opportunity to have a better future," Kerry said. "We also honor the U.S. troops and Department of Defense civilian who lost their lives, and the Afghan civilians who were killed today as they worked to improve the nation they love."

Officials said the explosion occurred just as a coalition convoy drove past a caravan of vehicles carrying the governor of Zabul province to the same event.

Another American civilian was killed in a separate insurgent attack in eastern Afghanistan, the U.S. military said in a statement.

It was the deadliest day for Americans since Aug. 16, when seven American service members were killed in two attacks in Kandahar province, the birthplace of the Taliban insurgency. Six were killed when their helicopter was shot down by insurgents and one soldier died in a roadside bomb explosion.

The latest attacks occurred just hours after U.S. Gen. Martin Dempsey, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, landed in Afghanistan for a visit aimed at assessing the level of training that American troops can provide to Afghan security forces after international combat forces complete their withdrawal.

A U.S. official who spoke on condition of anonymity said several other Americans and Afghans, possibly as many as nine, were wounded. The State Department said four of their staff were wounded, one critically.

Taliban spokesman Qari Yousef Ahmadi claimed responsibility for the attack in Zabul and said the bomber was seeking to target either a coalition convoy or the governor.

"We were waiting for one of them," Ahmadi said in a telephone interview with The Associated Press. "It was our good luck that both appeared at the same time."

The deaths bring the number of foreign military troops killed this year to 30, including 22 Americans. A total of six foreign civilians have died in Afghanistan so far this year, according to an AP count.

Provincial Gov. Mohammad Ashraf Nasery, who survived the attack in Qalat, said the explosion occurred in front of a hospital and a coalition base housing a provincial reconstruction team, or PRT. International civilian and military workers at the PRT train Afghan government officials and help with local development projects.

Nasery said the car bomb exploded as his convoy was passing the hospital. He said the doctor was killed, and two of his bodyguards and a student from the school were wounded.

"The governor's convoy was at the gate of the school at the same time the (coalition) convoy came out from the PRT," said provincial police chief Gen. Ghulam Sakhi Rooghlawanay. "The suicide bomber blew himself up between the two convoys."

Nasery said he thought his convoy was the intended target.

"I'm safe and healthy," he told the AP in a telephone interview.

Insurgents have stepped up attacks around the country in recent weeks as Afghanistan enters what could be one of the most critical periods following the U.S. invasion in late 2001 that ousted the Taliban.

The majority of U.S. and coalition forces are expected to begin a significant drawdown in the latter part of this year, leaving Afghan forces in charge of security across the country within months. Afghanistan also is gearing up for a presidential election next spring, and the Taliban have not yet accepted an offer to engage in peace talks in the Gulf state of Qatar.

There currently are about 100,000 international troops in Afghanistan, including 66,000 from the United States. The U.S. troop total is scheduled to drop to about 32,000 by early next year, with the bulk of the decline occurring during the winter months.

While there has been no final decision on the size of the post-2014 force, U.S. and NATO leaders say they are considering a range of between 8,000 and 12,000 ? most of them trainers and advisers.

The Taliban have already sought to disrupt the political process as Afghanistan's various ethnic groups prepare to field candidates to run in the presidential elections. President Hamid Karzai is banned by the constitution from seeking a third term.

The Taliban have increasingly targeted Afghan government officials in recent attacks, including an assault on Wednesday on a courthouse and government offices in western Farah province. Forty-six people were killed, including two judges, six prosecutors, administration officers and cleaners working at the site.

The Taliban have said civilians working for the government or the coalition are legitimate targets, despite a warning from the United Nations that such killings may violate international law.

They also have been staging complex attacks in Kabul and other urban areas. On March 14, the Afghan intelligence service seized a massive truck bomb packed with 7,257 kilograms (8 tons) of explosives on the eastern outskirts of Kabul. The truck apparently was going to be used in an attack on a NATO facility in the capital.
